2008 School and Tutoring Supplement

Andrews Osborne Academy
Students, families and faculty celebrated the start of a new school year at the newly merged Andrews Osborne Academy. Effective July 1, 2007, The Phillips-Osborne School and The Andrews School merged operations, yet maintained separate campuses.

Over the summer, construction crews worked to renovate and upgrade buildings at the Willoughby campus to bring all students together on one campus. Bringing the latest technology to the classrooms, while maintaining the traditional look and appeal of the original Andrews School buildings, is a perfect depiction of the culture at the new school.

Andrews Osborne Academy (AOA) is an independent, coeducational, college preparatory day (age 3 to grade 12) and boarding (grades 7-12) school, on a 300-acre campus located in Willoughby. Our academy offers early childhood, elementary, middle and secondary education to students in a multicultural setting. Contact the office of admissions for 2009-2010 enrollment. CLUB Z! Tutoring
Save your gas and time with a tutoring company that comes directly to your house.   Club Z! Tutoring has a very straightforward concept. Club Z! matches highly-qualified, local tutors to students who need help.   Each student has the same tutor for the entire program with lessons following the student’s school curriculum.   Parents never sign a long-term contract.

According to owner, Scott Best, “parents love the convenience and flexibility our program provides.   Because today’s schedules are so hectic with work, sports  and other activities, families appreciate how our tutors arrange tutoring times that work for everyone."

“We work with students aged pre-K to adult, offering tutoring in all subjects, including study skills, SAT/ACT prep and much more.   ” Best says.   “It is so rewarding to see children, who are struggling to keep up in their classrooms really flourish with individualized, one-on-one assistance.”

Gilmour Academy
Our Gilmour mission is “to develop the competence to see and the courage to act in creating a more humane and just society.”

As a Catholic, Holy Cross school, we are called to educate the mind and the heart. We partner with families to develop a safe, nurturing and morally-consistent environment with a vibrant family spirit in which students can find their voices.

Our expectation of a Gilmour graduate is one who has mastered the ability to think critically and to communicate, collaborate and solve problems effectively, but also one who has developed the essential skills and habits necessary for lifelong learning and a disposition toward serving others. The longer we are able to work with students, the greater the opportunity to help students embody this mission.

Gilmour Academy, located at 34001 Cedar Road, Gates Mills, can be reached at 440-442-1104 or online at www.gilmour.org.

Goddard Schools
Choosing the right preschool for your child may be one of the most complicated decisions you have to make. According to the Families and Work Institute, children benefit from quality programs: they suffer fewer behavioral troubles, have larger expressive vocabularies and enjoy more complex, less aggressive play with peers.

According to Kyle D. Pruett, M.D., advisor to The Goddard School®, “Preschools help a great deal by having children listen to both read and told stories and then discussing their content.   This encourages a sense of cooperation by listening and playing with others and rehearsing self-reliance.”

Play-based programs enhance the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of children from six weeks to six years of age.   Professional teachers provide a nurturing environment where children are encouraged to explore learning centers for creative art, math, science, and computers.   Goddard’s innovative program also includes foreign language, fitness, and manners.”

For more information, call 1-800-GODDARD or visit online at www.goddardschool.com.

Hawken School
In a time of financial uncertainty, a Hawken education remains a sound investment.

Hawken School makes a promise to families that a Hawken graduate will be able to “navigate a complex and dynamic world with self-confidence and determination; embrace challenges with disciplined analysis and creativity; and engage others with empathy and integrity.”

To prepare students for the future, Hawken offers a forward-focused curriculum that teaches students how to think, not what to think.

Hawken students learn by doing.   Through opportunities such as Hawken’s extension campus at University Circle, students participate in unique collaborations with some of the world’s finest cultural organizations, research laboratories, and hospitals.   This fall, students have been conducting an archeological dig whereby they are reconstructing a period in Cleveland’s past through a family’s history.   Internships in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine also enrich studies and offer valuable insights into potential career paths.

For more information, call 440-423-2950 (PS-8) or 440-423-2955 (grades 9-12).

Huntington Learning Centers
Today, it is almost necessary for college-bound students to arm themselves with ample preparation time and specialized instruction before attempting to take the ACT or SAT. This is the driving force behind Huntington Learning Center’s exam-preparation programs.

The programs are designed to significantly strengthen subject-matter knowledge, build confidence and improve test-taking skills. One-to-one sessions are offered during the day, after school and on weekends to be flexible to the scheduling needs of each student.

Students begin with a diagnostic assessment to measure existing skills and knowledge gaps that are critical to SAT and ACT success. During the instructional process, they also take real SAT and ACT exams on an ongoing basis to ensure they are mastering the material and improving their test-taking abilities.
