Gilmour Educates Mind, Heart

Our Gilmour mission is “to develop the competence to see and the courage to act in creating a more humane and just society.”

As a Catholic, Holy Cross school, we are called to educate the mind and the heart; we can do this most effectively when students are with us from preschool through grade 12. We partner with families to develop a safe, nurturing and morally-consistent environment with a vibrant family spirit in which students can find their voices.

Our expectation of a Gilmour graduate is one who has mastered the ability to think critically and to communicate, collaborate and solve problems effectively, but also one who has developed the essential skills and habits necessary for lifelong learning and a disposition toward serving others. The longer we are able to work with students, the greater the opportunity to help students embody this mission.

Learning is Abundant at Goddard Schools

Choosing the right preschool for your child may be one of the most complicated decisions you have to make. According to the Families and Work Institute, children benefit from quality programs: they suffer fewer behavioral troubles, have larger expressive vocabularies, and enjoy more complex, less aggressive play with peers.

According to Kyle D. Pruett, M.D., advisor to The Goddard School, “Preschools help a great deal by having children listen to both read and told stories, and then discussing their content. This encourages a sense of cooperation by listening and playing with others, and rehearsing self-reliance.”

The Goddard School adds, “Our play-based program enhances the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of children from six weeks to six years of age. Professional teachers provide a nurturing environment where children are encouraged to explore learning centers for creative art, math, science, and computers. Goddard’s innovative program also includes foreign language, fitness, and manners.”

Students Prepared for Future at Saint Joseph

At Saint Joseph Academy, we teach our students to become life-long learners. Learning how to learn is critical for their future success and survival. SJA also teaches them to find their passion by igniting sparks in the educational process.

Our students also learn to play well with others. Collaboration is the way of the future. People skills will become even more critical for success.

If this isn’t the perfect spot of Catholic education, what is? The need for Catholic education is as critical now as ever. It is our responsibility to strengthen the family, the church and the school, or else not complain when we raise an entire generation of Paris Hiltons and Britney Spears.

As educators, our role is to weave the teachings of Christ into the daily fabric of the life of the school – inside the classrooms, on the playing fields, whenever or wherever we gather as a school community.

SSMS Fosters Minds

South Suburban Montessori School is a flourishing, vibrant independent school educating children 18 months through 12 years of age. SSMS is a private, non-profit organization and has a supportive parent community.

Based on the teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori, its hands-on program begins with a foundation of concrete experience and progresses to abstract thinking, enabling children to become independent thinkers and problem solvers. The Montessori approach to education is an “approach to learning,” emphasizing the potential of the child from birth to age 12 in multi-age environments (18 months-3 years, 3-6 years, 6-9 years and 9-12 years).

Scientifically designed learning materials allow for a varied pace that accommodates many levels of ability by means of developmentally prepared environments under the guidance of professionally trained and certified Montessori teachers. Because interest is stimulated and the materials are available, some children acquire academic skills at an earlier age.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph Has Top

Pre-Engineering Program

A collaborative pre-engineering program with the University of Dayton positions Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School as one of the top pre-engineering high schools in Northeast Ohio.

Objectives in the UD PEP program are to introduce high school students to engineering, encourage them to consider engineering as a career and prepare them academically for success in an engineering program at UD or another accredited university. VASJ is the pilot high school for this initiative.

UD PEP enables students to gain familiarity with UD’s facilities, as well as an inside track to financial aid opportunities. Because both institutions are sponsored by the Marianists, engineering and technology are infused with social responsibility and Christian values.

UD PEP also involves a mentoring relationship between the program’s students and one of three VASJ faculty engineers. Upon the program’s completion, participants become solid, Christian, technical leaders who make a difference in the world.
